Exploring Harford County's 5 Best-Kept Local Secrets

As a lifelong resident of Harford County, I've had the pleasure of exploring all the wonderful hidden gems this place has to offer.  Whether you're new to the area or just concerned about missing out,  stay to the end, and I'll guide you through some must-visit spots in Harford County.

Number 1: Broom’s Bloom Dairy

Located in Bel Air, there's an ice cream place that's so popular that it's practically a local legend. You might think everyone has heard of it, but I'm always surprised to meet people who have never had the pleasure of experiencing it for themselves. This place is an absolute must-visit, and let me tell you why.

First and foremost, the ice cream here is nothing short of culinary perfection. They've got a lineup of flavors that change with every visit, while still keeping the classics constant.

But here's the twist, they have a secret other than ice cream that most don’t know about. The food. Best described as farm fresh comfort food, it’s one of my favorite places to eat at.  Now, I can't stress this enough: every item on their menu is nothing less than spectacular. It's a place where you can bring anyone, from the pickiest eaters to the most adventurous foodies, and everyone will find something to rave about.

So, what's not to love about this place? If you haven't been here yet, don't wait any longer—make it a priority. You won't regret it.

Number 2: Ladew Gardens

Is another hidden gem nestled discreetly within picturesque Monkton, that often escapes the radar of even the most seasoned locals. Ladew Gardens, is a sprawling 22-acre oasis, that is an absolute masterpiece.

Stepping into Ladew Gardens is like entering a secret world, with the star attractions being the exquisite topiaries that cover the grounds, showcasing the incredible artistry that has gone into shaping them.

But that's just the beginning here. Walking through the gardens, you'll encounter a Nature Walk and Butterfly House.  A favorite of mine is indulging in lunch at their onsite café. Eating outside in the gardens is truly a memorable experience. It's the ideal spot to bring your kids for a family outing, or perhaps it's the perfect setting for a romantic date.

Throughout the year, Ladew Gardens hosts a calendar of events that are nothing short of top-notch. Among these, the Garden Glow in October stands out as a must-see. It's a dazzling display of lights and colors that transforms the gardens into an otherworldly wonderland, and it's so popular that tickets sell out within minutes. Make sure you mark your calendar and secure your spot early for this experience.

One thing to keep in mind is that Ladew Gardens closes its gates for the winter on October 31st, but the good news is that it reopens in April of 2024. So, if you're planning a visit, make sure to do so quickly. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, an art lover, a family seeking a day of fun, or a couple looking for a romantic escape, Ladew Gardens is an absolute must-visit.

Number 3: Wargo’s Tavern Pit Beef

A well-kept secret among Harco residents is, Wargo's, famous for its pit beef.  This is a place that every food lover should experience, but is only available on Saturday’s.

The moment you step into Wargo's, the smell will greet you, if the owners don’t first. The star of the show is the pit beef, turkey and ham, but that's not all they have to offer. It is all served on homemade rolls that are nothing short of spectacular. In fact, these rolls are the best bread I've ever tasted.

Pro tip: Make sure to try their condiments and fries. If you're a fan of horseradish, don't miss their Tiger sauce and when it comes to barbecue sauce, Wargo's takes it to the next level.

Given the popularity, it's wise to call your order in ahead of time. Since it’s only available one day a week it is in high demand.

In short, Wargo's is a local treasure, and you won't want to miss it. So, clear your Saturday schedule, bring your appetite, and get ready to thank me later.

Number 4: Eden Mill Nature Center

Hidden in scenic northern Harford County, Eden Mill Nature Center is a secret spot waiting to be discovered. This sanctuary spans 118 acres and offers meadows, wetlands, forests, open recreational spaces, and the beauty of Deer Creek, all embraced by the  historic grist mill.

At the heart of Eden Mill, you'll find the ability to explore and learn in the form of a charming nature center. Here, visitors can gain insights into the delicate ecosystems that thrive within this environment. The historic grist mill museum is a testament to the area's rich heritage, providing a captivating glimpse into the past.

For those seeking outdoor adventures, Eden Mill offers tons of opportunities. The handicap-accessible canoe launch can take you on a leisurely paddle down the scenic Deer Creek, or you can join one of the group trips they offer. Hiking trails allow you to explore the meadows and woodlands at your own pace.  The pavilion, picnic tables, and grills provide the perfect setting for a picnic, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the forest and the gentle rush of Deer Creek.

What sets Eden Mill apart is its calendar of events that bring the community together in celebration of nature. Whether it's a seasonal festival, educational workshop, or a special wildlife observation opportunity, these events add an extra layer to the experience.

Number 5: J and T Snowballs

Tucked away in Fallston, there's a secret snowball stand that holds a special place in my heart.  A place known only to locals. If you're not from the area, you might be wondering, "What's a snowball?" But for those in the know, J and T Snowballs is the ultimate destination.

This place is so off the beaten path that it doesn't even have a website or a presence on social media. It's a self-run stand, a nostalgic throwback and has managed to maintain the authenticity of the experience over the years. While this secret treasure may be cherished by the lucky few who've discovered it, there's a certain hesitation I have in revealing it to the world.

I’ve been going there since I was a kid and the menu is a time capsule of flavors that haven't changed. What sets J and T Snowballs apart, though, is the way the owner has mastered the art of creating the perfect combination of flavors that keeps customers coming back for more. I swear I am addicted.

So, if you ever find yourself in Fallston, be sure to check this place out and don’t be basic, you have to try the Ninja Turtle or Ghostbuster which are my personal favorites.
